Kelsey hadn't met James. She only knew his name because Alexis had called out to him. They had shared a tragic loss, and neither had been able to speak to the other since. There was so much that Kelsey didn't understand. She reached over with her bandaged hand and squeezed James' carefully. Even that simple gesture caused her to wince as she whispered. "I'll be back. I have to find him."

Kelsey hopped down from the chair and started toward the door. She heard Ferren start to follow behind her. The girl turned and held up her hand. "No, Ferren. I need you to stay here and look after James, okay?"

She turned and started toward the door. Again, the puppy's feet sounded behind her. She turned once more to face her, and this time, had to look down at her own feet. Ferren looked up at her. On the surface, one might normally see little more than a pet looking expectantly up at a master. Kelsey saw something else, though.

"You're not going to stay here, are you?"

In response, Ferren sneezed and shook her head. At least, that's what some might have interpreted it as. To Kelsey, it may as well have been a great big 'hell, no!'

The girl rolled her eyes and knelt down in front of the puppy, running her hands through her soft fur. "Okay... but you stay close 'n quiet."

It was the dark of night when Kelsey and Ferren managed to get out of the station. Whoever went through the cameras later would see the pair sneaking off easily enough. So far, though, they hadn't been noticed by anyone nearby.

The girl felt bad about leaving James, and she felt even worse every time Alexis' cries for help echoed around in her head. She was severely traumatized, but the girl had no options left. She didn't know where to begin dealing with what happened. On some level, the girl was running on little more than instinct. She was an emotional and psychological wreck, but she wouldn't leave the last being who had seen Alexis alive. She was going to find Lrrow.

Security was patrolling the area. It had been heavily stepped up, especially after-hours, now that everyone had gone to their hotels and everything. They would have to be careful.

Kelsey ducked into a small alcove and waved Ferren closer with her bandaged hand. She whispered softly, hoping that the guards nearby wouldn't hear. It hadn't been long when James had run to the station, but now, it seemed like there was an entire spaceship between them and their goal. "I don't know if you can understand me, Ferren. I-I hope you can. I don't know why Lrrow snapped at you, but... we've gotta find him, okay? We can't leave him behind."

Intelligent eyes met Kelsey's. While Ferren had only made normal puppy sounds so far, she acted much more like a seasoned dog. More than that. When spoken to, she looked to the speaker, perked her ears to the voice, and reacted as if she both had heard and understood.

Nipping at Kelsey's hair, she gently pulled the girl's head down closer. Releasing her hair, Ferren sniffed at the side of Kelsey's head that had been laying against Lrrow's fur during her dream to contact Tierra. After sniffing for several moments to memorize the scent, the scent that was not Kelsey's or James', she backed off a few paces and started sniffing at the ground and air.

Ferren wandered off a bit, nose to the ground, then lifted her head and sniffed the air for long moments. Turning her head to look back to Kelsey, her little tail started to wag. Wandering towards a back alley blocked with a dumpster, she turned her head to look back over her should to make sure Kelsey was following.

Kelsey knelt down as Ferren nipped at her hair. As the cold nose took in Lrrow's scent, Kelsey couldn't help giggling. It was strange to have Ferren right there beside her. She was only used to seeing her in the dreams with the Terah archive. The girl placed her hand on the same cheek that had been resting against Lrrow. She hadn't realized just how strong Ferren's sense of smell was. She wished she could do that.

Kelsey whispered her thanks as Ferren began to follow the scent. At least, that's what she hoped was happening. As the puppy's tail started wagging excitedly, Kelsey's hope - little more than a smoldering ember at the moment - started to grow. Ferren glanced back at her, and Kelsey was indeed following closely.

She glanced around them for a moment, making sure the coast was clear. Then, she checked around the dumpster. If she needed to move it for them to get through, she wanted to make sure there was as little as possible to get in the way. It was going to be loud enough if everything did go smoothly!

Her mouth twisted in a moment of contemplation. Trying Ferren's little game, the girl tried to sniff out Lrrow's scent as well. She instantly regretted it, as all she smelled was the diverse garbage, waste and decay of the alley and the dumpster. Kelsey covered her mouth as she coughed, then whispered down at Ferren. "Oh, that is disgusting! How can you smell anything through that?"

Ferren smiled up at Kelsey, tail wagging. On each staccato exhale through her mouth, the release of air and wet sound of her tongue on the roof of her mouth made a soft "K, k, k" sound. Her eyes danced with mirth. If she could talk, she seemed to be amused by what was going on in her head as a response.

Alas. Something had gone wrong with both her reality translation as well as her bonding to Kelsey. Until it was corrected, she had only the unspoken communication of rudimentary sound and body language. And, of course, the expression of her eyes.

Padding over to the side of the dumpster facing the building it belonged to, if the label on the side of the dumpster and food smells matching the restaurant were to be trusted, Ferren walked through the space between the two. While an adult would have had a hard time fitting, or would not have fit at all, a puppy and a child could squeeze through without touching either the dumpster or building side.

On the other side of the dumpster, Ferren led Kelsey to the corner of the building. They waited there a short while, Ferren smelling the air and looking both ways. Ducking back into the ally, she avoided a flashlight beam shining down that byway. Another few moments, she peeked out. Satisfied, she led Kelsey across the byway street to the shadows behind another building.

Kelsey pouted adorably as she noticed Ferren's facial expression. "It's not funny!" Despite herself, she couldn't help a small giggle. She tried to keep her voice down as she followed the puppy around to the other side of the dumpster. As she saw the narrow squeeze between the dirty wall and the even worse dumpster, she balked.

She was used to the streets. She was used to the run-down, failing areas of the Watchtower. Even the strange sights and smells around The Deep were becoming familiar to her, but this? The girl still didn't like getting dirty. She bit her lip and held her breath as she carefully made her way into the alley.

Kelsey breathed a sigh of relief as she came through on the other side. The alley didn't smell much better. Actually, it was worse. She gritted her teeth and followed Ferren. She wasn't going to mess this up.

She paused as the pup noticed the light, and pressed her back against the wall as the guard moved past. Her heart hammered in her chest, enough that she was sure the guard would have heard. He kept on going, though, and both Ferren and Kelsey darted across toward the next building. She knelt beside Ferren, resting a hand in her soft fur. The child took a deep, calming breath, but Ferren could feel her hand trembling.

The side of this building had plants, shrubbery of some sort. Carefully pushing her way in between the woody plants and the building, Ferren led the way along from behind the building up the side toward the front facing the main through-way. The smell of the plants was so strong under here, so close. The twigs were sharp, snagging at skin, hair, and clothing. So long as they moved slowly, the rustling sounds they made were minimal.

Suddenly stopping, Ferren lifted her backside and positioned her tail to rest against Kelsey's forehead.

A few moments later, a light shone on the street ahead, barely visible through the leaves of the bushes they were hiding in. Footsteps, at least two security personnel. A soft hum. The light was coming from behind and above the walkers as they followed the street ahead of the bushes. A drone, the light was coming from a drone hovering above and following between the two security personnel.

Ferren barely breathed while the security officers and drone passed.

They were three more buildings down the main through-way before Ferren slowly began to inch forward again. She continued wiggling slowly along until she reached the corner of the building, gaining the perspective to be able to see both ways up and down the main street. She laid flat on her belly and watched both ways.

Kelsey wasn't used to plants at all. The only other place she had really seen them had been in her dreams, or some of the life support bays on Watchtower. Those weren't big enough to walk through - and she would have been in trouble if she'd gone anywhere near them.

Well, more trouble, anyways.

The leaves tickled her skin and tugged at her hair from time to time. As one twig scratched at her cheek, Kelsey gasped in surprise. She managed to keep her voice down. For a moment, she remembered her first dream in the archive, following Ferren through far fewer plants. She almost thought she was in another dream.

Those thoughts came to an abrupt halt as she felt Ferren's tail against her forehead. At the same time, she ended up looking right at Ferren's butt. Kelsey shook her head and whispered, "What? What's the pro..." She trailed off as the drone and guards made their way along. The girl froze in place, hoping the plants would stop moving as well.

She actually had to look down at the soil beneath them. Staring at the guards, their weapons, the drone... she would have done something stupid. Looking at the dirt, smelling the moss. It was strange stuff to her. It was soft and relaxing, even warm, unlike the cold decks of a starship. It helped her ignore what was going on only feet away as the guards continued on their patrol. Right now, the fair felt more like a prison. She could only hope they found those Horsemen and killed them before she did. She didn't want to hurt people, but the Horsemen? She felt differently toward them.

She wasn't ashamed of feeling that way, either.

Her hand curled into a fist and gathered some of the soil between her fingers as Ferren began to inch forward. She started to move as well, doing her best not to make too much noise.

They were so close. As Ferren stayed low, surveying each direction of the main street, Kelsey rested a hand in her soft fur. They would both need a bath after this. She whispered softly as the guards continued on. Kelsey knew how scared Ferren must have been. After all, she was scared, too! "Thank you for doing this. We're almost there, okay? We're gonna find him and get back to James. Then, we'll figure out where to go."

Kelsey's hand on her back, Ferren's muscles tensed and coiled. In a burst of movement, she sprinted across the street and into the shadows behind a trash bin beside an exhibit stall that smelled of food on the other side. Peeking her head out, Ferren watched Kelsey follow.

Once they were safely on the far side of the main street, they were not too much further away. They needed to follow the main street for awhile, and then they would find the spot where they had used cover during the murder. The actual crime scene was heavily guarded and there were still crews there... doing whatever it was they were doing. If Lrrow was still hiding near where they had last seen him, and it smelled like he was, then they would have to be very stealthy and quiet.

Slinking further back, Ferren led the long way around to parallel the main street out of sight. Sniffing at a dropped and trampled dumpling of some sort, she struggled to resist the urge to try if it tasted as good as it smelled.

Kelsey kept up with Ferren as the pair crawled closer to the terrible scene. The girl could smell something different in the air. She wasn't like Ferren, but she could smell death in the air. Not the man she would find and remove from the universe, though. There wasn't a trace of him. The bio agent that had been used nearby also resulted in warning areas around them.

Kelsey had no intention of joining that poor family. They would have to be careful, but the girl would avenge them, as well as the little girl who had been shot to death.

It filled her with rage as she realized that no one had helped. No one had stopped these terrible people. Just like on the Watchtower. Some had fought back, and the better-equipped Judgers had shot them all or blown their ships to pieces. She couldn't fight then. She wasn't even allowed to fight for Alexis' life when the time came. Not only that, but those who could have fought did nothing.

Her bitter thoughts were interrupted as she noticed Ferren's curious nature. As the puppy hesitated and started to sniff the food, the girl whispered. "I don't think that's like the fruit and plants from your home. Besides, that's on the ground. Even I wouldn't try something like that."

The girl gave Ferren a light scratch behind her ears as her stomach growled. She didn't feel hungry, but apparently, her body had different ideas. She looked down sharply at her belly and shushed it, then looked back at Ferren. "I'll get us all some good food after we get back to James, okay? Some good berries, or something for you. Deal?"

By comparison to the streets, the back ways were relatively unguarded. At least, they had been. It became clear as they got closer that it wouldn't be so simple. Kelsey and Ferren barely managed to duck behind a dumpster as two more guards and their flashlights threatened to discover them while walking along. Kelsey held her breath as they spoke among themselves.

"Yeah, it's pretty messed up. They took the one body and just left the rest. Like they didn't matter, or something, ya know?"

"I heard second section is being gutted for what happened. Taking bribes, or something. This was supposed to be their sector today."

The pair continued their conversation as they turned a corner. Thankfully, it took them away from the pair. Kelsey took a trembling breath as she peeked up and over toward the crime scene.

Dried blood still stained the ground, marking the gruesome scene of the murders on the other side of the tape. She hadn't seen the effect of the shots when they had occurred. Now, she did. She could see the lighter spatter of blood from the shots that had been fired during her run, as well as the ones that had ended her friend's life while she was helpless on the deck. Chunks of pavement had been ripped clear by the blasts as well. Blood pooled within and around the fluorescent line markings of the bodies that had died from bullets, and additional outlines stood as silent reminders of the poor family that had also been murdered.

The screams of the tortured family tore through her mind for a moment. She also heard the cries of the first child's mother, and Alexis' own calls for help. They mixed and mingled into one heartrending cry, and Kelsey had to close her eyes tight to keep herself quiet. She fought, and fought, and fought her way clear of those screams. She was going to find Lrrow!

Ferren licked at Kelsey's hand. Cool tongue moving fingertips, Ferren tried to break the girl out of whatever trance she was in. Kelsey had locked up and was completely unresponsive. Rather than while, Ferren just brushed her fur against Kelsey's leg and then darted toward a nearby exhibit booth and dove under the fabric hanging on the side of the booth to get under it.

For several long moments, nothing was heard or seen of Ferren. However, when her nose wiggled out between the ground and the fabric to sniff at the outside air again, it didn't take her long to come back out with something furry held in her teeth. She had Ferren by the scruff of the back of his neck, and was dragging the limp figure with her out from under the booth and back to where Kelsey was.

The pup struggled to pull the full-grown fox along with her. Lrrow was evidently unconscious, and his body was emaciated compared to when they had seen him only hours ago. The complete lack of illumination in his horn was another sign that something was different compared to the last they had saw of him.

Bringing Lrrow to Kelsey's feet, Ferren put him down nearly on top of Kelsey's shoes and sat upright to pant open-mouthed. Tongue wagging, she stared up at Kelsey expectantly.

Kelsey blinked and took a sharp breath as she finally broke away from the terrible memories. As she came back, the girl focused on Ferren's face, then down at the fox at her feet. Her eyes widened as she saw Lrrow's painfully thin condition and the darkened horn. At one point, it had almost blinded her.

She whispered to her pup as she checked on Lrrow. "Thank you, Ferren! Oh, jeez... we-we're going to help him, okay? M-maybe some water - and some food, right? D... damn it, you'd better be okay!"

She reached down to pet Ferren's head and gave her a scratch behind her ears. Positioned as she was between them, she didn't notice the tears that landed on Ferren's snout and on Lrrow's neck. Shifting her hands over, she carefully tried to pick Lrrow up. She wasn't very strong, but the girl wasn't about to back down. Their best bet was to get back to the security office.

She grunted with the effort, but managed to carefully pick Lrrow up. The girl carefully cradled him in her arms as she looked down at Ferren. "C'mon. Let's get him back... and tomorrow, you're getting a bunch of those little snacks you were lookin' at!"

When Kelsey tried to lift Lrrow, she would find he was surprisingly light. Less than ten pounds, certainly, probably closer to six or seven. His muscles were limp, but flexible. He was breathing, but shallowly. He was still warm.

Ferren shook out her fur once Lrrow was lifted, also shaking off the drops of moisture that had fell and beaded on the fine fur of her snout. Her tongue licked hungrily out of her mouth at the promise of treats, but she still seemed unsure. She was not entirely comfortable of Lrrow. Now that Kelsey had picked him up, it wasn't like Ferren could take him back to die alone...

Huffing, Ferren followed Kelsy, frequently turning her head up to glare at what she could see of the unconscious Lrrow.

Kelsey was certainly worried for Lrrow as she picked him up. It was the strangest combination of anxiety and relief that she had ever felt. His condition was grave, but he was still alive. She whispered to him as they made their way back. "It's okay. You're safe, now. We're going to take you back to James, and we'll help you get better."

She made her way back with Ferren, the pair of them keeping a careful eye out for the guards. It wouldn't do to get caught while heading either direction - at least, not until they were clear of the secured zones. She was used to disappearing into crowds. Sneaking around the backs of guards was not at all familiar to her, and she was very thankful when Ferren held her back. There were plenty of close calls. She would have never made it on her own.

Kelsey glanced down and happened to catch a glimpse of Ferren's glare. She bit her lip, then took a moment to kneel down and pet her fine fur. "Hey... I know you two kind of argued at first... and I don't know exactly why. Whatever that was, I know he hurt you a little." She leaned forward and gently kissed the top of Ferren's head. "I also know that I wouldn't have dreamed if he hadn't told me to. You wouldn't be here. I would have... I would have probably done something really stupid. We're both here because of him."

She was gone.

A security officer asked about the girl that had been with him, and James Edgar had been completely lost at first. Of course Alexis wasn't with him, she had been brutally murdered in the street after giving herself up. But no. The officer meant the little girl. Slowly looking around the room, James Edgar confirmed for himself that the girl and that puppy were nowhere to be seen.

"Did they visit the bathroom?"

The officer was irritated. No, a female officer had checked the female and nonbinary gender bathrooms and the male officer speaking had checked the male bathroom. The female officer was checking outside now, in case the girl had taken the puppy to do its business outside, but no one had seen them leave.

"I should help search."

Exasperated, the officer turned and walked out of the room. Had that been what he had wanted from James Edgar all along? Using his arms to push himself up, James stood shakily. He felt old. Very old and tired to the marrow.

He couldn't face Omen like this. He didn't even want to face himself. Speaking of bathroom, he should visit there himself... though he would prefer to avoid mirrors entirely right now.

After washing his face and relieving himself, James Edgar left the security station and passed the female officer just outside. He forced a smile and offered to look down the alley behind the restaurant. She tutted at him, explaining that she had looked there as far as the undisturbed trash bin, but didn't stop him.

Putting his hands on the trash bin, he leaned his weight into it. Little by little, the wheels rotated and the heavy bin began to budge. It felt good to feel the physicality of moving something. Of something steadfast giving under his effort.

If only grief could be that simple to digest and move past.

The bin clanked as it moved to be flat with the back wall of the restaurant. For a long moment, James didn't let go or move. This had been so simple, so straightforward. If only for a bit longer, he wanted to stay where it was simple, rather than face life right now. But, he noticed the silence after soft voices. Had a girl been talking quietly as he had been moving the dumpster slowly in the shadows?

Righting his posture, he released the bin and turned to face the alley he had opened the way through. Sure enough, he could see the glowing blue eyes of what was at the right height and shape to be the puppy in the shadows. The crouched shape beside it could easily been the girl. Choosing to assume it was them, James took another step forward.

"You shouldn't have gone on your own without telling anyone. People were worried."

Extending his hand in the shadows, he held it out. Waiting for the girl to take his hand.

@BBPhage
Kelsey jumped a little when James started to move the dumpster. She hadn't expected anyone to find them. Their efforts to get back to the security office had been so focused that the girl hadn't realized how close they really were. She did her best to remain still. It could be anyone. She hadn't expected to hear James' voice admonishing her for disappearing. She let out a relieved sigh, unaware that it came out sounding more like a sob.

"I... I couldn't take the chance of anyone saying no. They would have, too, because of... of where I needed to go."

She was still scared. Closer to terrified, actually. Kelsey shuffled toward James with Ferren behind her. As she neared James and the light from beyond the alley, it was clear that she was carrying something.

She finally emerged, looking every bit like the child expecting a scolding. Even so, she still looked ready to stand her ground. The girl had done the right thing as far as she was concerned, and no one was going to change that. She carefully held Lrrow's weakened form in her arms. Her own clothes were covered in dirt, grime and who-knew-what-else from their little escapade.

"I found him... h-he's hurt. We need to help him. We have to help him."

James exhaled sharply, a tone of amusement in the sound.

She didn't tell anyone, because she had something firmly in her mind she intended to do and didn't want anyone to try and stop her. Sounded like the sort of rationalization Alexis might make. James was amused, and on some level he respected her self-reliance, but the sensation also hurt. Just to think of any association to Alexis hurt. It hurt so much he stopped breathing for several moments.

Then his eyes rested on the beast in her arms.

Poor Lrrow. James felt a kinship with the beast that he never had before, a connection that defied words of explanation. The best he could articulate the feeling to himself was that Lrrow looked how James felt, now that Alexis was gone. Starved for the lack of her. Dying from need.

"Come. I have an emergency kit in my ship that includes a glucose IV drip."

Scooping the girl up in his arms, one arm around her back and the other under her knees, James lifted her and glanced down at the puppy. It lifted a lip and its tail bushed, but it didn't bark or try to bite him. Smart puppy.

"Heel."

Walking purposefully, James made his way through the streets. The girl in his arms curled protectively around the emaciated fox-like creature. The puppy panted as it struggled to keep near his ankle and stare up occasionally at the back of Kelsey's head.

Time seemed to pass slowly, but it was not long before James arrived at a ship hangar with docking space for rent. It was open at all hours, but the lateness of the hour left only one person on duty with the automated systems. With a smile up at a camera, hand-scan, and wave of a chipped dongle, James made it through the automated security access for renters to access the individual ship dock platforms.

Approaching his ship, he again presented his hand for a scan and typed a code into the pad before the ship opened to grant them entrance. It was a small ship, the interior cramped to the point most people would probably feel claustrophobic even flying alone. Surely, no more than two people could fit in the tight space during distance flight.

Twisting the ops chair around, one of only two chairs in the ship, James put the girl down into it. Moving further down the hallway toward the cockpit, he opened a kit mounted to the wall. Digging out a clear sack of fluid connected to a tube, he twisted a clean needle to the end of the tube and returned to the OPS station. Hanging the bag from an exposed cord in the ceiling, he crouched down before Lrrow and adjusted the fur around the beast's neck. Feeling around with his fingers until he felt a point that throbbed with Lrrow's heartbeat, he finally poked the needle in. He wasn't sure he had found a good vein, till red blood began to ooze from the prick wound around the needle.

"...she would be so much better at this."

James looked up to the girl with scratchy, red eyes that had no more tears to give.

@James Edgar Midas

Kelsey didn't object when James picked her up and started making his way toward the ship. She craned her neck around to make sure that Ferren was still with them and smiled reassuringly down at her. "It's okay."

She turned back to look down at Lrrow, careful not to injure the frail creature. She whispered to him, hoping that he would hear on some level. "You're going to be all right, Lrrow. Just... just hang on."

Ever the observant girl, Kelsey watched as James went through the various security measures. Her eyes widened with wonder as she looked up at the small vessel. Sure, it might be cramped, but to someone as small as her - with as little as she had - it was very impressive.

As the hatch opened to grant them access, the girl ducked reflexively. It sounded like some of the access hatches for the vents in the Watchtower. It yawned open, though, much wider than any of those small crawl ways, and James walked them up into the ship.

She hadn't been on very many ships. The girl was always in awe of how different they all looked, both outside and in.

She looked up at James as he placed her in the chair, careful not to disturb Lrrow. When she could, though, she did spare a hand to reach out for Ferren. She stroked her soft fur, hoping to hide her trembling - and provide some form of comfort to the pup as well.

It was a flurry of activity as James returned with the equipment, hung it over her head and then started trying to insert the needle. She heard him comment on how Alexis would be better at such things, and instantly flashed back to the first time she had met her. The woman had saved her life back on Throne. Kelsey had once told her that she'd return the favor. Now, she never could.

As she looked down at Lrrow, she could see the needle in him. She gave him a gentle pet, careful to avoid the tubing, then looked over at James.

Kelsey saw the grief in his eyes, the shared pain that they both felt. Her own eyes had yet to dry, and Kelsey reached forward again. She was careful to avoid disturbing Lrrow, but nevertheless tried to pull James in for a much-needed and desperate hug.

James E Midas allowed himself to be hugged. His body shuddered with sobs that were impotent without tears. Eyes burned with effort to produce tears, to which there were no more to give. His shirt stank of the brine and of the fear and loss. Arms loose at his sides, he sniffled.

What was he going to do now?

He had no idea what he was going to do.

How many years had his heart taken to heal the last time it had been broken?

He would have to heal again from this new loss.

If Alexis was now dead and Lrrow looked to be dying, what had become of Aster?

Would Lrrow and Aster cease to be without her? In a morbid thought he quickly dismissed, he wondered if that wouldn't be fitting. Without her, he would not be the person he had been able to be with her ever again. In a way, a version of him had died with Alexis.

A tube of warm fur crawled down onto Kelsey's shoulder from the chair and rubbed against the side of her face as it rested its head on top of James' hair. It was a snow ermine. Omen's sparkling little eyes glittered with tears. The fluid gummed its fur from its eyes down the fine hairs along its cheeks.

On the floor of the small ship, Ferren was exploring. Sniffing everything she could reach. First, she had looked through everything in the back bedroom and storage area until she had satisfied herself. Now, she passed James and Kelsey on her way to the cockpit.

Kelsey looked over in surprise as Omen nuzzled her. She hadn't really experienced any pets outside of Ferren, and even that had only been in dreams before the last several hours. Even so, the girl was perceptive, and she saw right away, the sadness in those eyes. She reached a shy hand up to pet Omen's soft fur. It was small comfort, but it was all she could think of to offer.

She even tried to wipe some of the gummed tears along the fur as she whispered. "Even you know what happened... don't you?"

She didn't give up her hug with James as Ferren continued to explore. The smallest part of her was amused by the pup's commitment to learn every bit about the world around her. She was always curious, it seemed. At least, when there was no immediate danger.

No immediate danger. Kelsey was always curious despite the danger. Unbidden, her thoughts flashed back to the gunshots that had killed Alexis. She hadn't seen the last one, but that only seemed to intensify the horror of what had happened. She had seen the pool of blood that had been left behind.

Lrrow had seen all of it.

Her breathing quickened as she helplessly thought of what it must have been like. No one had helped her. Not even Kelsey. Guilt stabbed through her heart, and from the wound was starting to build a very grim, very dark resolve.

It terrified her more than the gunshot as that resolve started to find words. "I feel... dark. I want to rip them apart. I want to tear every star they care about from the heavens. I... I don't like this feeling."

James slowly pulled away. As he did, Omen climbed over his hair and settled itself into a curl around his neck as it nosed its face beneath his collar. James E. Midas looked into Kelsey's face, searching it. After several moments, he gently shook his head and touched the girl's chin.

"No. Alexis wouldn't have wanted that for herself and she certainly would not have wanted it for you. Actually, she would probably be appalled if she heard you say that and scold you until the dark thoughts left your mind. That isn't you. It wasn't her."

Slowly standing to his feet, James took the hanging IV from where it hung from the ceiling in one hand and gently scooped an the other arm under the backs of Kelsey's knees so she could lean into him and be carried without letting go of Lrrow. "I know just the thing. You need a nap with three furry animals cuddling around you."

Taking her to the back of the ship, James hoisted her onto the bunk over the tiny galley. The berth mattress was thin, but comfortable, and at the level of James' hair when he stood erect. Hoisting Kelsey and Lrrow up to sit on the edge of the bed, he then climbed a few rungs of the ladder to hang the IV back from the ceiling over the tiny galley. With a shrug, he coaxed Omen to climb down his other arm down to the bed next to Kelsey.

Ferren had followed them, and yipped a few times, but now she sat on the floor with tail wagging and nose pointed at Kelsey. Patiently waiting.

"Good pup." James lowered himself back down to the floor and picked up the dog to lift it up to the bed beside the girl.

"Rest. Try to get some sleep. If you get hungry or thirsty, the food, water, and juice are in the galley here." With a nod and a sad attempt at a smile, James wandered back toward the front of the ship to rest in the cockpit seat.
