hell is empty and all the devils are here
Aari would arrive in the meeting room, trying to clear any hint of anger from her expression. Without thinking, she would walk to the head of the table, only to realize that her rightful spot on the thrown was blocked by an old hag that unfortunately wasn't yet locked away in some crypt. Realizing her mistake Aari pulled the seat out, as though positioning it for Nelia before taking a seat on the right side with a huff. Even her stern glances were ignored by the waitstaff as they prepared things for Nelia who would likely arrive at any moment.

Finally taking the time to notice Akoni, she gave a bit of a yawn, as though bored with the conversation she hadn't even started with him. "Is your sister changing into something more suitable?! I at least hope so," Aari still didn't understand why anyone would even show up to an event dressed in such a way. Even the sins' attempt to take the hellfire that was surely going to be directed at Aari for the mess that had been made, wouldn't hit her even if it flew directly at her face. She looked down at her nails with a sigh. "If Nelia doesn't get here in the next Millenia she probably fell and can't get up," Aari muttered under her breath.

Akoni tensed, but did not look away from Aari's scorn.

"Suitable? No. She is changing back into the outfit she wore at the fair, along with a bit of perfume to try and mask the stink of fear that still permeates the clothes. I suggested she just strip a member of the help, but she is too proud to wear a staff uniform."

Easing himself to a seat as more food was brought in, he resumed eating. Setting aside the usual attempt at genteel manners, he shoved food into his face with a ferocity fueled with frustration and anxiety. Not to say he ate like an animal, not at all. He made no mess and used his cutlery as they were intended. However, with innocent eyes no where nearby, he no longer bothered to chew. Food passed his lips and was just as quickly swallowed. One filled plate. Two. He was on his third plate already, and his midsection was beginning to swell.

Beatrix entered and turned, easing the door silently closed behind her. Stealing from the door to her seat, she moved with her head down and with minimal sound, trying her damnedest not to be noticed.

She did not dare to look up at anyone. Not even her brother. She again was dressed in the hooded garment she had been wearing at the time of the Fair attack. There was a splotch under her left breast, what looked to be a splash of some white sauce that had been dabbed from the fabric too late after the initial threat of staining. The crusty texture of the splotch indicated that the garment had not been washed since the accident, though it still might be there forever as a stain.

Sku'ra'uk watched the interaction between Aari and Akoni curiously, antennae twitching. He could feel their anger, frustration, and anxiety bubbling away. The actions of the rogues had them quite rattled. On the walk to the secluded room, Sku'ra'uk had called his crew and instructed them to begin gathering every scrap of information about the incident and the rogues. Thankfully, he had possessed the foresight to bring along a pack of synths, which would go unnoticed compared to a Ski'taurii. With any luck, the reports would provide much-needed first steps towards running the rogues down.

Akoni's aggressive hunger drew a curious glance from Sku'ra'uk. While he knew the man wasn't human - his mindfeel was wrong - but the inhuman display was rather more interesting. Perhaps the eating was a coping mechanism of sorts; humanoids had the strangest habits. Selecting an empty spot, Sku'ra'uk settled at the table, once again pushing the useless biped chair away in distaste. At some point he was going to have to get some proper seats for these meetings - it was undignified to crouch there just for the sake of the bipeds' social comfort.

As Sku'ra'uk began contemplating a plate of food for himself, subtle vibrations brushed his antennae. Two feet, slinking along, in through the door. Shifting slightly, Sku'ra'uk eyed the source of this noise, and found himself mildly surprised. It was the same woman from the Gala, the one who'd eyed him so oddly when he approached Aari. She was no longer dressed like a pleasure slave, and moved like a whipped cur. Curious, considering her confidence earlier. Reaching out, Sku'ra'uk gently skimmed the surface thoughts of the twins, seeking to better understand their behavior. If they were anything like Aari, neither of the twins would so much as suspect anything amiss.

Nelia dashed Aari's hopes as the door opened once again. The woman entered, her flowing gown now replaced by the far more formal suits that she preferred. She made her way along the table, glancing at each of the attendees in turn. Not everyone was here just yet, but that didn't bother her.

She gave a polite nod to Sku'ra'uk as she passed by him. Their introduction had been short, but she had nevertheless been glad for his attendance. The events of the fair had required far more direct - and quick - actions than she would have liked. Despite that, Nelia was nothing if not quick on her feet. Some - probably plenty more than Nelia was aware of - saw her age as a liability. That would be their mistake.

The leader of the cult studied Sku'ra'uk as best as she could. The slightest of smiles tugged at the corners of her mouth as she noticed the entirely useless chair nearby. "If you have plans for a chair of your own, I would be happy to have it built for you."

The woman smiled at Aari and the twins. Despite her earlier remarks, she wanted Aari to succeed. To learn from her in the time that Nelia had left. They would be having a very blunt conversation later, but this was not the time.

She nodded in approval at the dishes along the table and rested a hand on Akoni's shoulder. "As always, you set a beautiful table, Akoni." Her tone was light, a stark contrast to the matters they would be discussing shortly. She even managed to tease him a little, as was often the case. "And you've managed a head start."

The woman paused partway along her walk, then turned back to face Beatrix. She studied the woman, her attempts to avoid eye contact, her simple clothing - and the stain. "You are unusually quiet, Beatrix."

With a low growl at the sudden sounds of Nelia's approach, she grabbed the wine that was being laid out on the table and proceeded to drink from her glass at an alarming rate as to keep herself from saying anything she knew she would regret. Aari didn't bother to return to smile and instead just pretended she was too occupied with the drink she was currently guzzling down. Her eyes wandered over to Beatrix as Nelia gave her remarks. "That's all well and good Nelia but don't you think we should be focusing on something other than how talkative Beatrix is?!"

Try as she might, Aari couldn't exactly remain quiet, even as the food began to take its place in front of each of those that had entered the room. "I mean...it's about time that you came in here and told us all your glorious knowledge and wisdom. I mean delaying things might mean that we never get to hear those words right? Time isn't exactly on your side." It was a bold statement for even Aari to say to Nelia's face and even at the realization of the angry words spoken did she begin to brace herself for what retort might come. "I-I mean I think perhaps we should get right to business. You know them better than any of us." Aari tried to add a bit more softness.

"Food is an important life-enabling resource," Akoni insisted as Neila complimented his seeing to the food, voice a bit odd as he spoke between bites with his jaw still unhinged like that of a snake, "and we will all need our strength for the tasks before us."

Not seeming to be phased by Neila making light of his "head start", Akoni paused in his feasting. Jaw again clicking back into place, his distended face tightened back into more human features. Snatching up a cup, he downed its contents in a single pragmatic gulp.

"My meals haven't been as regular due the the circumstances of the day. I still may need an IV to catch up, but later."

Beatrix gave her brother a pitying look. She didn't have any change of clothes, or blood nutrient packs with her either. She felt the reality of just how hard the unplanned circumstances had derailed her intentions, her life. It was clear to her, it was a necessity for her to plan better and have more reliable fall-backs in the future.

Neila turned the spotlight to her next, and Beatrix cringed slightly. Shrinking under Neila's gaze, she opened her mouth to reply and then quickly shut it. It took a moment to gather her resolve before she tried again.

"It is embarrassing how hard an impact one unforeseen spectacle on my plans and intentions. I need to work harder to rebound with more grace, to plan less rigidly."

Closing her mouth again, Beatrix stared hard at the plate before her. Done voicing the judgement she assumed Neila was thinking at her, Beatrix waited. Ready for harsh insults. Hoping attention would pass from her.

Then, Aari came to her rescue.

Beatrix looked up from her plate to bestow a thankful look on Aari as the woman insisted Beatrix' talkativeness was immaterial and it was much more important to get right to the serious talk. Problem solving. Action plans.

Well, this was a curious way of going about things for such an organization. Ski'taurii high councils were far, far more formal, with an almost ritualistic air to their proceedings. In sharp contrast, the other members of the cult were informal to the point of being like brood-kin. Sku'ra'uk found this mildly baffling - shouldn't individuals with such power and authority conduct themselves accordingly? Nevertheless, he was more than capable of working with the circumstances he'd found himself in. An irritated antenna flick met Nelia's remark about seating; Sku'ra'uk had thought these people capable of foresight. Arrangements had already been made to provide proper furnishings for the Voice in the future. For now, he would make do as he often had. Bipeds so rarely took the needs of other species into consideration where comfortability was concerned.

As he watched the others interact, Sku'ra'uk surreptitiously began eating from a plate of food that he'd gathered, consisting primarily of meats and fruits. Long, thin arms clad in ornately gilded wrappings reached out, picking choice morsels from the plate before withdrawing into Sku'ra'uk's voluminous robe, where muffled eating noises could be heard. Nelia's cooks certainly knew how to prepare a meal, if nothing else. The Voice allowed himself to enjoy the delicacies, but kept his full attention on the conversation going on around him. These people were supposed to be his associates, after all.

"Yessss, by all means provide enlightenment, Lady Nelia. The actions of these, ksh-ksh-kshss, rogue agents is a mosst perturbatory occurrence." Aari's temper hadn't diminished much (even if her sensibility was returning), so Sku'ra'uk spoke in an attempt to prevent the conversation from bogging down over temperament and other pointless trivialities. Nelia and Aari could scold each other some other time. "I have agentssss investigating the incident and its aftermath independently, but you no doubt have a more essstablished network on Neagious, ks-ks. There are, certainly, plans in mot-tion to deal with the source of this unfortunateness, yesss?" Sku'ra'uk's amber gaze settled Nelia as he spoke, watching the woman closely.
