Welcome to Maelstrom
Welcome to the Maelstrom Nebula, a haven for those who have left Earth in search of greener pastures. The year is 2652 and those who have arrived at this strange, new sector are hardly the same humans that left Earth many centuries ago. These humans have advanced and evolved beyond our wildest dreams in order to survive the vastness of space. Earth's fleet has been exploring the universe in aging ships, and have surveyed a large, habitable nebula, discovering an untold number of worlds, some candidates for terraforming, others already capable of sustaining life. They call this sector Maelstrom.

What they don’t know, is that Maelstrom is heavily settled by alien and humanoid species waiting to reveal themselves, on worlds that initial scans did not detect. Worlds created by you.

Maelstrom is a sci-fi-themed roleplaying site where the universe is created collaboratively by its members. Here you can you can play as humans or transhumans exploring the Maelstrom Nebula, or you can create your own alien species and their homeworld, and tell their story! Your alien species can be something close to human or something totally unfamiliar. Its culture can be primitive or light-years into the future. Its homeworld could be a teeming megalopolis, a tropical jungle, or a barren wasteland. How do you interact with the influx of humans, or your alien neighbors? It’s all up to you! We like to think of the site as Spore meets Alpha Centauri with a sprinkle of Starcraft and Battlestar Galactica. It's organic world-building... on stim patches.

Ready to start your journey into Maelstrom? Start by reading our Site Rules. Next, you'll want to apply! You can start your journey by creating a character using our Character Application Template. You may choose from one of the several species available to play, including humans and posthumans. Or you can create your own species to play. Just go to the Compendium and fill out the corresponding applications for creating your alien species. In no time, you’ll be ready to shape your world and make your mark on the nebula.

Not a world builder? No problem! You can play as a human living on the Watchtower space station, or play as any of the available species in the Compendium. Simply submit your Character Application and once it's approved, jump into the galaxy and start roleplaying.

Technology-level: Bleeding Edge
What kind of technology do the humans on the Watchtower use? Maelstrom draws heavily from a variety of sources such as Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, and Firefly. Think blasters, lasers, AI, hyperdrives, and wormholes. It's the Standard Sci-Fi Setting from TVtropes.org. A resource that we recommend for writing general sci fi themes and motifs is The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction.

For alien technology, please see the approved species sheets in the Compendium for each corresponding alien that you would like to roleplay.

Generally speaking, the setting falls around a 4 on Mohs Scale of Science Fiction Hardness.
